At the Simpsonville Chamber of Commerce annual banquet on August 15, Laurens Electric awarded two Community Impact Initiative grants to deserving projects.
The first grant was awarded to the Simpsonville Garden Club to construct a community garden at the Center for Community Services on Howard Drive in Simpsonville.
The raised vegetable garden is intended to be used as an educational tool for students at the Head Start program, located at the Center, and produce from the project will supplement the Center’s food bank, providing fresh vegetables to more than 207 families a month.
Rebecca Garcia with the Simpsonville Garden Club says, “The project presents an opportunity for neighbors to come together and work toward a solution to alleviate hunger, as well as learn lifelong skills.”
The Center for Community Services, located in the Golden Strip since 1997, is a multiservice center offering easy access to human services in Greenville County, including emergency assistance, education, and healthcare.

A second Community Impact Initiative grant was awarded to the Leadership Golden Strip Class IV to revitalize the children’s sections at three Golden Strip branches of the Greenville Library System.
The leadership class, facilitated by the Fountain Inn, Mauldin, and Simpsonville Chambers of Commerce, plans to introduce new educational interactive tools for children, incorporate art, and provide “mommy and me” seating to breathe new life into the library branches.
Lynda Lamkin with Leadership Golden Strip Class IV says the project will provide “a fun, comfortable, and visually exciting environment for children in the libraries and give them positive, lasting memories of reading and learning.
