Cashier Kelsey Barnett paid forward $500 to Clemson University’s bluegrass ensemble, Tigertown Roots.
The donation will help support the group’s annual trip to the International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass event, taking place September 16–20 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
“This trip helps the students continue their education in bluegrass music at the largest, most well-known bluegrass event in the world,” said Kelsey.
The event features a business conference, awards ceremony, and music festival. Tickets are available to the public at worldofbluegrass.org.
“I love that the Clemson bluegrass program keeps bluegrass music alive and gets young people playing instruments and singing the music that I love,” Kelsey added.
The Tigertown Roots program began in 2017 as the idea of student Ryan Wilson, who continues to lead the ensemble today.
Current and future Clemson students interested in joining the class can contact Ryan at rwilso9@clemson.edu.

The Pay It Forward program began in 2015. Every Laurens Electric Cooperative employee is entered into a random drawing to receive $500 to pay forward in any way they choose. Each month a new name is drawn, and the employee then has one month to apply the funds toward their own act of kindness.
This initiative is budget-neutral; the funds come from Laurens Electric’s charity events, which employee volunteers make possible.
