Locater James Ferguson paid forward $500 to the Laurens County Cancer Association.
James said, “So many members of my family have suffered from cancer,” adding “I wanted the money to stay local, to help people in our community.”
The non-profit organization is dedicated to supporting Laurens residents who are battling cancer. Its goal is to offer assistance to cancer patients and their families, raise awareness about the disease, and provide education.
Fundraisers and donations help with:
- fuel assistance
- prescription assistance
- nutritional support (Boost, Ensure, Glucerna, etc)
- medical equipment
- personal hygiene and household items
Additionally, the association offers resources and helps connect individuals in need with necessary services.
There are only two qualifications to receive help: you must be a resident of Laurens County, and undergoing treatment under the care of an oncologist.
According to Laurens County Cancer Association’s web site, hopeincommunity.net, “We strongly believe in the strength of community and are dedicated to enhancing the lives of those impacted by cancer in Laurens County.”

The Pay It Forward program began in 2015. Every Laurens Electric Cooperative employee is entered into a random drawing to receive $500 to pay forward in any way they choose. Each month a new name is drawn, and the employee then has one month to apply the funds toward their own act of kindness.
This initiative is budget-neutral; the funds will come from Laurens Electric’s charity events, which employee volunteers make possible.
