Laurens Electric Cooperative is actively monitoring Hurricane Irma. Some storm prediction models forecast the hurricane potentially moving north up the coast line after it hits Florida.
If the storm turns north, LEC will start to make preparations for potential outages. Employees are currently checking inventory to make sure there is plenty of equipment on hand. Other plans, such as acquiring additional crews, won’t happen until officials are more certain of the storm’s threat to LEC’s service territory.
If the co-op determines Irma poses no threat to its service area but impacts other regions, LEC will send crews to other electric cooperatives along the SC coast to help with restoration.
Much of storm preparation work is done throughout the year by aggressively keeping the co-op’s rights-of-way clear of potential hazards such as tree limbs.
Co-op staff, line crews and dispatchers are on-call 24 hours a day in case of outages.
